How Long After Rebonding Can I Wash My Hair? Day-by-Day Guide

Wait 72 hours, or three full days, after rebonding before you wash your hair. For those same three days, keep it dry, loose and straight: no tying, no clips, no tucking it behind your ears.

That’s the short answer to “how long after rebonding can I wash my hair”, and it’s the one most Singapore stylists will give you as you leave the chair. The reason is simple: the neutraliser has locked your hair into its new straight shape, but the bonds are still settling. Water, pressure and bends in that window are what turn a sleek rebond into a kinked one. New to the treatment itself? Start with our complete guide to rebonding in Singapore.

This guide covers why the wait matters, what counts as “wet” in a city this humid, how to tie, clip and sleep, your first-wash routine, what to do if you washed too early, and a day-by-day plan for your first week.

Why You Have to Wait 72 Hours

Rebonding works by breaking the bonds inside each strand, pressing the hair straight, then using a neutraliser to lock those bonds back together in their new position. The neutraliser does most of the work in the salon, but the new shape keeps firming up over the next few days.

During that time, anything that softens or bends the hair can leave a mark:

  • Water swells the strand and can loosen the fresh shape before it has fully set.
  • Pressure from a hair tie, clip or headband can press a bend into hair that is still pliable.
  • Tucking hair behind your ears does the same thing, just more slowly and on both sides of your face.

Some newer systems are more forgiving, and a few stylists will give you a shorter window. If your stylist tells you something different, follow them: they know which products went on your hair. If nobody told you anything, 72 hours is the safe default.

What Counts as “Wet” in Singapore

This is the part people get caught out by. Not washing is easy. Staying dry for three days in Singapore is harder.

The Meteorological Service Singapore puts our mean relative humidity at around 82%, often above 90% before sunrise. Normal humid air isn’t the same as getting your hair wet, and you don’t need to hide indoors. What you’re avoiding is hair that actually turns damp.

Situation Counts as wet? What to do in the first 72 hours
Shower Yes Use a shower cap and keep the water off your head
Rain Yes Carry an umbrella; if you get caught, blot gently and blow-dry on low, keeping hair straight
Gym, running, hot yoga Yes, from sweat Skip heavy workouts for three days, or choose a light, air-conditioned session
Swimming pool or sea Yes, plus chlorine or salt Stay out for at least the full 72 hours; many stylists suggest waiting about a week
A sweaty commute or outdoor queue Sometimes Keep your hairline and nape dry with a tissue or small towel, and cool down in air-con
Steam room or sauna Yes Skip it for now
Normal humid day No Carry on, just keep hair loose and straight

A good trick for the first three days: plan your week around the appointment. Book rebonding when you don’t have a long outdoor event, a beach day or a heavy training block lined up.

Can I Tie, Clip or Tuck My Hair After Rebonding?

Not for the first 72 hours. No ponytails, buns, claw clips, headbands, sunglasses pushed up on your head, or tucking hair behind your ears. Anything that holds a bend for more than a few minutes can leave a crease.

If you absolutely need hair off your face (for work, cooking or a mask strap), use the loosest option you can: a soft, wide scrunchie sitting low at the nape, taken out as soon as you can. Even then, some stylists would rather you didn’t.

After three days, you can tie your hair again. Go for soft scrunchies over tight elastics for the first couple of weeks, and don’t sleep in a tied style.

How to Sleep After Rebonding

  • Sleep with your hair loose and straight, spread out behind you rather than bunched under your neck.
  • Use a smooth pillowcase. Satin or silk creates less friction than cotton.
  • Don’t sleep on damp hair, at any point in the first week.
  • If you tend to toss around, gently smooth your hair straight again in the morning with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

Your First Wash After Rebonding

When the 72 hours are up, the first wash is gentle, not a deep clean.

1. Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot.
2. Use a sulphate-free shampoo on the scalp only, and let the suds run down the lengths. Skip clarifying, anti-dandruff and “deep cleansing” shampoos for now, since strong cleansers are harder on chemically treated hair.
3. Condition the mid-lengths and ends, and comb through with a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is in.
4. Blot, don’t rub. Press water out with a microfibre towel or an old cotton T-shirt.
5. Blow-dry straight away, on a low or medium heat setting, pointing the nozzle down the hair shaft. Don’t leave rebonded hair to dry bent or tied.
6. Finish with a leave-in or light hair oil on the lengths. Rebonded hair is drier than it looks.

You rarely need a flat iron after rebonding, so let yourself skip it, especially in the first couple of weeks.

What If I Washed Too Early (or My Hair Got a Kink)?

Don’t panic. It happens: a surprise downpour, a forgotten hair tie, a night of tossing and turning.

If your hair got wet early, blot it gently and blow-dry it straight right away, then leave it alone. Often the result is fine, or just slightly less sleek in one area.

If you notice a bend or kink, don’t try to fix it yourself with a hot flat iron on high heat, and never with a home straightening product. That’s how a small crease turns into damaged, over-processed hair.

Go back to your stylist. Show them the section and tell them what happened. They can judge whether it will relax with normal blow-drying or needs that section re-pressed. Ask what their policy is; many salons will at least look at it for you.

It’s worth fixing properly. A rebond is not a cheap service: on the 42 Singapore salon menus we reviewed, most full-head rebonding costs about $160 to $300. Our rebonding price guide has the full breakdown by hair length and salon tier.

Your First Week After Rebonding, Day by Day

When Wash? Tie or clip? What to do
Day 1 (appointment day) No No Keep hair loose, straight and dry. Sleep with it spread out
Day 2 No No Shower cap on, skip the gym, carry an umbrella
Day 3 No No Last full day of the 72 hours. Keep your hairline dry
Day 4 Yes, first wash Loosely, if needed Gentle sulphate-free wash, condition, blow-dry straight right away
Days 5 to 7 Yes, two or three times a week Soft scrunchie only Leave-in on the lengths, low heat, back to light workouts
Around week 2 As normal Yes Colour is usually OK from about two weeks, if you tell your colourist it’s rebonded

After the First Week

Rebonded hair stays straight permanently. What changes is your new growth, which comes in with its natural texture, so most people book a regrowth touch-up every four to six months.

To keep the treated lengths looking good until then:

  • Keep using sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
  • Wash two or three times a week rather than daily if your scalp allows it.
  • Keep heat low and use a leave-in or oil on the ends.
  • Rinse with fresh water before and after swimming.

If your scalp feels itchy, red or stings after a rebond, don’t scrub it with a strong shampoo. Tell your stylist, and see a doctor if it doesn’t settle. HSA notes on HealthHub that skin sensitivity or allergy is the most common issue linked with cosmetic products, which include straightening lotions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after rebonding can I wash my hair?

Wait 72 hours, or three full days, after rebonding before you wash your hair. Washing earlier can loosen the new straight shape while the bonds are still settling. For those same three days, avoid tying, clipping or tucking hair behind your ears, and keep it dry from rain, sweat and swimming. Follow your stylist if they give a different window.

Can I tie my hair after rebonding?

Not for the first 72 hours after rebonding. Ponytails, buns, clips, headbands and tucking hair behind your ears can press a bend into hair that is still settling. After three days you can tie it again, but choose a soft scrunchie over a tight elastic for the first couple of weeks, and never sleep in a tied style.

Can I go to the gym after rebonding?

Skip heavy workouts, running and hot yoga for the first 72 hours after rebonding, because sweat makes your hair damp just like washing does. A light, air-conditioned session is lower risk if you keep your hairline dry. Stay out of the pool and sea for at least three days, and many stylists suggest waiting about a week.

What happens if I wash my hair too early after rebonding?

Often the result is fine or only slightly less sleek, but washing too early can loosen the shape or leave a kink. Blot your hair and blow-dry it straight right away. If a bend appears, don’t fix it with high heat or a home straightener. Go back to your stylist so they can judge whether that section needs re-pressing.

What shampoo should I use after rebonding?

Use a sulphate-free shampoo and a proper conditioner after rebonding, from the first wash onwards. Wash with lukewarm water, shampoo the scalp only, condition the lengths, then blow-dry straight right away. Skip clarifying, anti-dandruff and deep-cleansing shampoos in the first week, and add a leave-in or light oil to the ends.
